Yory's Personal Page

My Photo

Welcome to my page!

Wow, when I started my page, it seems important to me to present my
work and interests, and then I realize, that it is somewhat like to make your own self-portrait. What is not so easy, because the object and the subject are the same. How to be honest if you want to look in a certain way and you have the opportunity to "remake" yourself? Soon I've got, that if continue swinging between the mirror and reflection, my page will not appear.

So, let it be!

I was born mid-50’s in Sofia, Bulgaria. As we like to say, it is small, but beautiful “Angle” at the edge of Europe. Mountains and valleys, rivers and wonderful sea beaches, hundreds of spring waters – yes, the nature is generous here. The best is to see it by yourself.

Actually, I do not know, whether the fact I am a “Homo Balkanicus” predicted my career.   The history and culture of Balkans and the very special “spirit” of it grabbed my attention. The first was knowledge of Turkish language that opens a new  window to a neighboring  culture. After graduating from Turkish philology, I worked at the Turkish newspaper “Yeni Ishik – New Light”. Then came my reporting position at the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency, the post-graduate study, Ph. D thesis...  Finally, I found myself at the Institute of Balkan Studies, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, studying the Turkish Literature and culture and generally speaking, the Balkan cultural interrelations.

Work Information
Now I am an associate Professor. Alongside with academic research, I teach history of Turkish Literature and the Introduction into the Literary Theory of Turkish Literature, Turkology on the Balkans and, of course, Turkish language at the University of Sofia.

My Department

Our Department of Cultural History of Balkan Nations at the Institute of Balkan Studies is relatively independent unit with rather specific field of studies within the Institute. The staff of the Cultural History of the Balkan Peoples has concentrated their studies on the problems involving the aesthetic and literary development in the region within the period ranging from the Middle Ages to this very day. Our studies include the characteristics of cultural phenomena that define the uniqueness of the Balkans and their contribution to European continental identity. Our section has focused mainly on two global problems: the incorporation of Balkan cultures in the European universum and the specific in the intellectual history of this geographical crossroads.
